History:
Oh. Well.

So once upon a time there were all these mafia families, and the most awesome of them was the Vongola because of their magic Vongola rings of awesome. Second in awesome was the Giglio Nero family, keepers of the seven Mare rings and an Arcobaleno pacifier, whose beautiful lady boss unfortunately contracted one of those Mysterious Anime Diseases and died. She left behind her very young civilian daughter as the successor, a famiglia being targeted by the aggressive Gesso family led by Byakuran, our series Big Bad, and a certain heartbroken second-in-command Lightning Guardian named Gamma. Although Gamma at first refused to accept the change in leadership, "Princess" Uni won him over and soon had him as her devoted lapdog Guardian, just as he'd been to her mother, and for three months the Giglio Nero clung to a fragile peace.

Then shit got real.

After Genkishi's little stunt with the Varia and subsequent god-knows-what-happened-behind-those-closed-doors meeting between Byakuran and Uni, intended to negotiate a cease-fire, a suddenly icy and apparently brainwashed Uni announced her decision to merge the Giglio Nero and Gesso families into the Millefiore family, making herself and all her followers Byakuran's subordinates as the Millefiore Black Spell. Enraged and horrified but unable to defy or abandon Uni, Gamma grudgingly became one of Byakuran's six Funeral Wreaths (Millefiore's supposed six strongest fighters possessing the Mare rings, ala the six Vongola guardians) and his attack dog, hunting down and executing Vongola members and their allies as captain of the Black Spell 3rd attack squad. He cheerfully beat the crap out of Gokudera and Yamamoto's past selves and nearly killed them, but was interrupted and got his ass handed to him by tyl!Hibari. His later grudge match with Gokudera led to him confessing his hatred for Byakuran and certain Black Spell traitors aka Genkishi, and Gokudera finally defeated him with the Sistema C.A.I.


TL;DR Personality:

There are two versions of Gamma. One is the self that served the Giglio Nero and was haplessly in love with his boss and did his best to keep the family out of the Gesso's warmongering and tirelessly looked after his subordinate "younger brothers" and probably didn't get along with Genkichi even then and was, despite being a mafioso, a somewhat decent, honorable, and good-natured man. He was over-protective and easily exasperated, but his smiles were genuine.

The other version was created the day Uni went into that room alone with Byakuran and came back out with dead eyes, and told Gamma that the only person ever allowed to touch her again was Byakuran. This Gamma is bitter, hurting, and very, very angry, to the point where he'd lash out at his own subordinates or beat the shit out of two punk kids as a form of indirect revenge. Gamma hates Byakuran with the burning fiery passion of a thousand suns but he hates himself more for not being able to prevent what happened, for having failed Uni and by proxy her mother. He smirks all the time to cover up the intolerable mess his life has become, drinks way too much, and deliberately overlooks the fact that he and the rest of his men have become just as vicious and cruel as the Gesso they once opposed. His mellow attitude is a poor mask for his temper and self-loathing and cracks easily under the right pressure. As much as it might benefit him, Gamma so far hasn't been able to bring himself to actively support the Vongola against Byakuran, since he blames and resents them both. There's an apathetic part of him that thinks anything that happens now is already too late, or that nothing he could possibly do will fix the situation, which is why he hasn't done anything drastic like deserting or trying to grab Uni and flee. He talks shit to Gokudera about how he was going to be the one to defeat Byakuran and get revenge and all that, but it's taken on the shape in his mind that a direct challenge will be his last stand. Gamma might not really have a problem with that in itself but if he makes that choice, it's the same as a conscious decision to leave Uni alone/no longer put her welfare first.

It kills him that he no longer has complete faith in Uni. As much as he firmly believes that the change in her behavior and the merger are Byakuran's fault, and is still martyr enough to do anything Uni asks of him, there's some insidious doubt about Uni's real intentions and feelings towards him and he is, just a little bit, afraid of her. Uni (or the idea of Uni as the Giglio Nero successor) is more or less the last little bit of sanctity he has, the only thing he can use to justify forced obedience to Byakuran, and if it turns out that her 'real self' is gone forever or that she was always Byakuran's puppet and was lying to Gamma about That Certain Line Of Dialogue to deliberately manipulate him, then he's got nothing left. He would still serve her, of course, but a guy can only get his spirit broken so many times. The idea of her intuition, not to mention her absolute power over Gamma, completely and willingly under Byakuran's command fucking terrifies him.

Yes, fandom, he's in love with Uni. He'd deny it and probably get mad and strangle anyone who suggested it but it's true and he damn well knows it. It's also not something he's particularly okay with, built as it is out of his love for Uni's mother and his constant, guilty searching for her ghost within Uni. He might joke about Uni being the only woman in his life but it's not that much of a joke, and between she and her mother he's pretty much ruined himself for any kind of normal relationship.

He tells himself he's okay with this. He's not.

Uni's confession shook him deeply. He still doesn't know exactly how to take that since, let's face it, it sounded just as much like a goodbye as it did a love confession and her mother did the same thing to him before she died. It's the sort of thing that keeps him up at night.

Gamma has a tendency to refer to himself like he's a seen-it-all-done-it-all-too-old-for-your-bullshit old man, probably as a defense mechanism, and is just a tad annoyed that there are so many goddamned kids as central players between the Vongola and the White Spell. He's happy to creatively interpret (or subvert) orders and, according to Shoichi, is "much more capable when he's willing," which is rarely. If the opportunity ever actually arose he might hesitate over attacking Byakuran, since it would follow that only Byakuran can return Uni to normal, but he'd go after Genkichi or any of the White Spell in a heartbeat if he thought he could get away with it. He is capable of sincere friendliness and even charm when he's not being a bitter alcoholic asshole, and has no problem asking a pretty lady if it hurt when she fell from Heaven, but he carries such a torch for Uni's mother that most of his flirtation is empty routine. He'd have to be unbelievably smashed to let a woman in his bed and not care that he'd inevitably end up calling her a wrong name.

He has no idea his Mare ring is a fake, or when it was replaced.


NOTE: Uni's mother has a name, and there is no way that Gamma wouldn't know what it is, so in the interest of NOT CATERING TO AMANO'S INFORMATION WITHOLDING WHIM I'll probably have Gamma refer to her as 'Regina,' for reasons of plausibility and lol.
